9.68kW Solar Installation in Kingston

Black solar panels on a Kingston roof with open country and the hills beyond

Iconic Energy designed and installed a 9.68kW solar system at a home in Kingston. Twenty-two Longi 440W panels feed a single GoodWe 8.5kW inverter, with the array split across the roof planes that suited it.

Sizing the array

Twenty-two Longi 440W panels give a total array of 9.68kW. Panel count is what sets array size, and the right number comes out of how much electricity the household actually uses rather than a standard package. Our guide to what size solar system you need works through that calculation.

The roof here allowed the panels to be laid in runs on more than one plane, which is often what decides how many will physically fit before anything else is considered.

Inverter and isolation

A single GoodWe 8.5kW inverter handles the array. Inverter capacity below total panel capacity is normal and deliberate: panels rarely produce their full rated output at once, so a slightly smaller inverter is usually the better match.

The inverter, PV isolator and associated switchgear are grouped on the exterior wall and labelled, so the system can be isolated quickly by anyone who needs to work on it.
