Home battery storage

Solar Battery Installation in Hobart

Home battery storage, sized around how your household actually uses power.

For most people, a battery is about one thing: using more of the solar you already generate instead of exporting it for a few cents.

Iconic Energy is a Tasmanian owned electrical and solar business based in Kingston, installing home batteries across Greater Hobart. Every recommendation starts with a site assessment, and the federal battery discount is shown clearly in your proposal.

Why batteries are becoming worthwhile

As power prices rise and the feed-in tariff stays low, exporting your surplus solar is worth less than using it yourself.

Tasmania\'s regulated minimum feed-in tariff is 9.276 cents per kilowatt hour for 2026-27. Compare that with what you pay to buy power back in the evening, and the case for storing your own solar becomes clearer.

A battery stores solar for the evening, overnight and peak pricing periods. We help you work out when storage makes sense, how it fits with your existing panels, and whether backup power during outages matters for your home.

The federal battery discount

The Australian Government's Cheaper Home Batteries Program reduces the upfront cost of an eligible home battery by around 30%.

Support is delivered through STCs and is tiered by usable battery capacity. Since 1 May 2026:

Usable battery capacitySTC factor applied
First 14kWhFull factor
14kWh to 28kWh60% of the factor
28kWh to 50kWh15% of the factor

The first 14kWh receives the full STC factor. Support then tapers for additional capacity, so larger batteries receive a lower effective level of support per kWh.

Two things to know before you commit

The discount is based on your installation date, not the date you sign. The factor steps down over time, so the date your battery actually goes in is what determines the discount. If you are weighing up timing, this matters.

Eligible batteries have a nominal capacity between 5kWh and 100kWh. We confirm the exact discount for your system in your proposal.

Full detail on current incentives, including the feed-in tariff, is on our solar rebates and incentives in Tasmania page.

What size battery do you need?

Battery capacity is measured in kilowatt hours. Around 90% of the household battery systems we've installed have been between 16kWh and 24kWh.

That does not mean every home needs a battery in that range. We size from evening consumption, solar exports and the amount of backup you actually want:

  • How much power you use after dark, when your panels are not generating
  • How much solar you currently export rather than use
  • Whether you want backup power during an outage, and for which circuits

Oversizing can be an expensive mistake. A battery that is consistently under-used leaves capacity — and capital — sitting idle. We work from your bills and solar export data rather than guessing.

Backup power during blackouts

Not every battery keeps your power on in a blackout. Backup has to be designed in, and most systems back up selected circuits rather than the whole home.

Depending on the battery, inverter and electrical configuration, backup can cover selected circuits and in some installations may extend further. We confirm what is practical during the system design.

Tell us early if outage protection matters to you. It changes which battery and inverter suit your home, which circuits are backed up, and how the switchboard needs to be wired.

As licensed electricians as well as solar and battery installers, we handle the electrical integration directly rather than subcontracting it.

The problem with rushed battery installs

Many homeowners get sold batteries that don't deliver expected savings.

Solar batteries added without reviewing existing solar power systems. Systems sized incorrectly for real usage. No consideration of future upgrades. Electrical or safety limitations discovered too late.

These issues stem from installs focused on the product, not the home. Without proper planning, battery storage can underperform, limit renewable energy systems expansion, or create safety concerns.

Our site assessment

Iconic Energy completes a full site assessment for every battery installation. If another configuration, such as expanding your solar, would suit your situation better, we explain the options clearly.

Power bill analysis

We review your bills to understand consumption patterns, peak usage times and current costs. This is what determines the right battery capacity.

Energy usage review

We look at when you actually use power, how much solar you export now, and which circuits you would want backed up during an outage.

Layout assessment

We determine the best battery location, evaluate your electrical infrastructure, and confirm your home can support battery integration safely.

Power requirements discussion

We discuss your goals for lower bills and less reliance on the grid, how much blackout protection you want, and any future upgrades you are planning.

Provider liaison

We handle communication with power providers and TasNetworks on your behalf for grid connectivity, feed-in tariff optimisation, and compliance requirements.

Adding a battery to an existing solar system

Plenty of Hobart homes already have solar panels and are now looking at storage. We welcome retrofit enquiries, and the first step is working out what your current system can support.

  • Inverter compatibility: some existing inverters can work with a battery directly, while others cannot.
  • Hybrid or separate battery inverter: depending on your system, the right approach may be a hybrid inverter or a separate battery inverter added alongside your existing one.
  • Electrical and system assessment: we check your switchboard, metering and existing wiring before recommending anything.
  • Whether it stacks up: we tell you straight if a retrofit does not make financial sense for your home.

Batteries we install

We install and support home battery systems from GoodWe, Sigenergy, Sungrow and Tesla.

The right product depends on your usage, backup requirements and existing equipment, so we recommend a battery after the site assessment rather than before.

Battery storage for homes and businesses:

Home battery storage solutions: Store solar energy for evening use, reduce electricity bills, provide backup power during outages, and increase energy independence.

Commercial batteries: Manage peak demand charges, provide energy security for business continuity, and support sustainability goals.

Industrial batteries: Larger renewable energy systems for facilities with high energy consumption or critical backup power requirements.

Whether you’re adding battery storage to existing solar power systems or installing a complete solution, we create home battery systems matched to your energy goals.

Safe, compliant, and future-ready

Battery storage places demands on electrical infrastructure. Iconic Energy makes sure your home meets current standards and can support solar batteries safely.

We identify capacity or compliance issues early, conduct battery performance reviews after installation, and provide clear guidance on monitoring and maintenance. This protects your investment in energy independence.

Common questions about home batteries in Hobart

How much does a solar battery cost in Tasmania?

It depends on battery capacity, brand, backup requirements and installation complexity. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program takes around 30% off the upfront cost of an eligible battery, and we confirm exact pricing in your proposal.

Is there a battery rebate in Tasmania?

Yes, but it is federal rather than state. The Cheaper Home Batteries Program applies Australia-wide, and as at September 2026 Tasmania has no separate state battery rebate.

What size battery do I need?

It depends on your evening usage, how much solar you export and how much backup you want. Around 90% of the household batteries we've installed have been between 16kWh and 24kWh, but we size every system from your own data.

Will a battery keep my power on in a blackout?

Only if it is set up for backup, and usually only for selected circuits. Tell us early if this matters so we can design for it.

Can I add a battery to my existing solar?

Often, yes. It depends on your existing inverter and electrical setup, which we check during the site assessment.
