Solar Savings Calculator

Move the slider to your average quarterly power bill for an indicative estimate of what solar could save your household. The figures come from Iconic Energy's modelling for a north-facing Hobart home, not from your own roof or usage, so treat them as a starting point rather than a quote.

Estimate your solar savings

Drag the slider to your average quarterly power bill.

$300
Estimated first-year solar benefit ~$1,330
Estimated 10-year solar benefit ~$16,300

Includes estimated savings from reduced grid electricity use plus credits for surplus solar exported to the grid. Actual credits depend on your retailer and tariff.

Indicative estimate only, not a quote. Based on Iconic Energy's modelling for a north-facing Hobart home with solar only (no battery) and 30% of solar used at home. The 10-year figure assumes power prices rise 4.5% a year, which is Iconic Energy's modelling assumption, not a forecast. How this estimate is calculated

How this estimate is calculated

The calculator uses savings figures modelled by Iconic Energy for a range of quarterly power bills, from $100 to $2,000. Your bill is matched to those figures, with bills in between estimated from the nearest modelled amounts.

  • Your bill: used only to place you on the modelled range. Nothing you enter on the slider is stored unless you choose to send us your details.
  • Solar system: each bill level is modelled on a specific system size.
  • Roof: a north-facing roof at a 22 degree pitch in the Hobart area.
  • Tariff: Aurora Energy's TAS93 residential tariff.
  • Using your own solar: 30% of the solar generated is assumed to be used at home as it is produced, allowing for days when nobody is home. The rest is exported to the grid.
  • Exported solar: the estimate includes credits for surplus solar exported to the grid, as well as savings from buying less grid electricity. That is why it can be higher than your current bill. Actual export credits depend on your retailer and tariff.
  • Power prices: the 10-year figure assumes power prices rise 4.5% a year. This is Iconic Energy's modelling assumption, not a forecast.
  • Not included: batteries, panel degradation over time, shading, other roof orientations, and changes in how much power your household uses.

Results are rounded to the nearest $10 for the first year and the nearest $100 over 10 years. They are indicative only and are not a quote or a guarantee of savings.

Why your actual result may differ

A calculator can only work from a typical home. Your real savings depend on things it cannot see:

  • Which way your roof faces, its pitch, and any shading from trees or nearby buildings
  • How much of your power you use during daylight hours, when your panels are generating
  • Your electricity tariff and your retailer's feed-in rate
  • The system size and equipment that suit your roof and switchboard
  • Future plans such as a battery, an EV charger or other new loads

That is why every Iconic Energy recommendation starts from your own bills and roof. You can read how we approach solar panel installation in Hobart, and our guide to solar panel costs in Hobart covers current indicative pricing.

Why using your own solar matters more than exporting it

Tasmania's regulated minimum feed-in tariff is 9.276 cents per kilowatt hour for 2026-27, well below what you pay to buy power from the grid. Every kilowatt hour you use yourself is worth more than one you export.

That is why how much of your solar you use yourself has a big effect on your savings. Running appliances during the day, or adding a battery to store solar for the evening, can increase the value of your system. See our solar battery installation page if storage is on your list, and our guide to solar rebates and incentives in Tasmania for the federal discounts that reduce the upfront cost.

What happens during an Iconic Energy site assessment

If the estimate looks worthwhile, the next step is a site assessment. We review your power bills and usage, look at your roof orientation, shading and available space, and check your switchboard and electrical setup.

You then receive a proposal with the recommended system, clear pricing with the applicable incentives shown, and savings estimated from your actual consumption rather than a typical home.

Common questions

Is this a quote?

No. It is an indicative estimate based on Iconic Energy's modelling for a typical north-facing Hobart home. A quote needs a site assessment.

Why can the estimated benefit be higher than my power bill?

The estimate includes credits for surplus solar exported to the grid as well as savings from buying less grid electricity. On smaller bills, those credits can take the total above what you currently spend. Actual credits depend on your retailer and tariff.

Does the estimate include a battery?

No. The figures are for solar only. A battery changes how much of your solar you use yourself, so it is assessed separately.

What system size would I need?

Each bill level is modelled on a specific system size. Iconic Energy generally designs residential systems from around 8kW upwards, and your actual system size is confirmed after the site assessment.

How reliable is the 10-year figure?

Less certain than the first-year figure. It assumes power prices rise 4.5% a year, which may not happen, and it does not allow for panel degradation or changes in your usage.
